The Nexus is no stranger to new arrivals, welcoming approximately 0.83 Drifters a day on average. Today, however, is unusual. A great many more Drifters seem to have appeared all at once, a major influx unlike any seen in over a century. Unprepared to handle so many new faces needing explanations all at the same time, the Welcoming Center is positively abuzz with activity - and all of their brand new citizens are thrust into the fray of the ensuing mayhem of volunteers attempting to calm them.

A. Arrival

One of the main rules of those tasked with receiving new Drifters is to be prepared for anything - for anyone to show up in any state of being, including but not limited to: being in need of immediate medical attention, being in a fit of violence and rage, being completely nude, and any combination of such dramatic situations.

While this is relatively simple to handle if there are only one or two new arrivals on any given day, the number of arrivals this day has greatly exceeded expectations, and so has the chance for those dramatic situations to occur.

It is clear that the Welcoming Committee was not prepared to handle an abundance of these situations happening simultaneously.

Whether you as a new Drifter are experiencing one of these situations, or are simply caught in the crossfire of such circumstances, the typically calm and tranquil setting of the Welcoming Center's rooftop is currently one of chaos. Colorful uniforms of flowing linen denote the volunteers clearly familiar with what is going on, attempting to keep people orderly and diffuse the tension, though they seem to be having mixed results.

B. Orientation

Over the countless years since the Welcoming Center had first been built, a great number of different approaches to integrating Drifters into the populous had been attempted, until it had been decided that one on one personal greeters who took the time to approach new Drifters with empathy and undivided attention was the most successful at curbing the stress of arrival.

Such an approach is practical when dealing with the typical trickle of Drifters; it is, unfortunately, impossible to assign individual greeters to a veritable flood.

Having to resort to some of their more archaic methods, whole groups of Drifters are assigned to singular greeters, with yellowing brochures that had to be dug out of storage being passed around for the masses. Even an old film has been unearthed, and is being projected for all to see on one of the large white walls within the Welcoming Center.

Welcome to The Nexus! Assuming you are calm enough to make it through orientation, you are given this general overview:

The Nexus is a city existing in the crossroads of an interdimensional Rift, and you have been pulled here from your own place and time - and unfortunately it's a one way ticket no one can control, so everyone present is going to do everything they can to make sure you live here comfortably for however long you may be here. You are given access to housing accommodations, a communications device, a map of the city, and the contact information of whichever lucky greeter was assigned to your group.

Assuming you aren't calm enough to make it through orientation - wait, no, where are you going? Please don't just leave through the front door, we haven't finished explaining everything yet, and -

This is a special open event post to get the ball rolling on this sandbox! Feel free to use the prompts here, to come up with your own, or to simply start posting to the community! You may have your character be one of the many new arrivals, or you may have your character be an already established citizen dealing with all the discord, it's entirely up to you. Expect there to be several vague arrivals and volunteer characters that aren't player characters, and use them within your prompts however you see fit!

Have fun!

The Nexus:

The Nexus is a vast city built at the epicenter of the Rift. With a population as diverse as the sky is wide, from time periods ranging anywhere from prehistoric to space-faring futuristic, the city's style has reached an equilibrium of fantastical yet technologically advanced. Most structures are made of brick and stone, with classical styles designed to withstand the test of time, yet flying crafts, a metro railway system, and a city-wide network are also implemented into the infrastructure.

At the city's center rises the Welcoming Center, a towering building situated between two enormous Great Crystals that are believed to protect the city, as well as serve some role in causing the Rift. The Welcoming Center's roof, overlooking the city in its entirety, serves as the point at which Drifters appear. This was not always the case, as Drifters used to appear anywhere within a mile radius of the towering Great Crystals, but thanks to tireless work done by geniuses some few centuries past, a smaller artificial Crystal was installed that draws Drifters to a point directly beneath it.

The Welcoming Center serves as a place of orientation as well as communal congregation, with its many halls dedicated to the day to day operations of the city as a whole. There is no police force or centralized hierarchical government in The Nexus, but rather a vast web of volunteer organizations and social workers who oversee the everyday concerns of its citizens, established on cultural tenants of peace, community, and hospitality.

Essentials such as food, clothing, medicine, and shelter are freely given to those who need them. What little economy exists is primarily a bartering system driven by tradecraft, with several sections of the city designated as the commons to be used by all citizens. "Shops" still abound, but are voluntarily staffed and rarely demand compensation for services, with material goods often being exchanged for either simple tasks or other material goods.

The Outside World:

While much used to be known of the world outside the city's walls, some several thousand years past, a miasma grew to cover the continent beyond. The substance, manifesting as a clear fog that makes the world look blurred, is toxic to all Drifters and their descendants - causing choking and a drain of life force while within it, as well as disorientation and memory loss even long after the short term effects have subsided. Native flora and fauna, and monstrous creatures that lurk outside, appear to be unaffected. A perfect dome envelops the city keeping the miasma at bay, believed to be created by the two Great Crystals that sit at its center.

Travel to the outside world is possible while in possession of a Great Crystal shard, though it is fraught with danger. While there have been some reports of settlements centered on other Great Crystal shards in the great continent, communication with such settlements has been infrequent and disjointed. Caravanners will leave the city from time to time in search of adventure, and a potential solution to the miasma that plagues the world, though few have ever returned.

Premise:

At the crossroads of the fabric of space and time exists a place in the fold where all the worlds' edges meet. For as long as anyone can remember, this place has always existed, drawing in wayward souls from places so myriad and dissonant it became a wonder that, instead of conflict, came peace and cooperation. From the wake of the Rift's epicenter grew a grand and stretching city called The Nexus.

Roughly seventy percent of this world's population are known as Drifters: people who have strayed here from their own place and time. The remainder, those called Domestic, can always trace back their lineage to ancestors who had themselves been Drifters. While the exact nature of how and why the Rift exists remains a mystery at large, a few common rules have been observed:

Though flow from The Nexus back to other worlds is possible and occurs on occasion, it is rare; flow from the Rift into The Nexus, on the other hand, is frequent enough to occur nearly every day.

Most Drifters will never return to their home world - though if they do, they are almost always bound to return to The Nexus some day.

For this reason, one stalwart truth exists among this world's people: The Nexus will always and forever strive to be home to any and all who cross its threshold.

The Crystal Nexus is a tiny invitation only panfandom sandbox! The general tone for the sandbox is both slice of life with some adventure mixed in.

Pretty much any character will be welcome - OCs (including canon OCs), fandom characters, AU versions of fandom characters, duplicates, etc. - so long as said character is not a real person, not offensive, and doesn't make others within the community uncomfortable. You can choose to have your character come to The Nexus completely new, or to have been at the Nexus for some established period of time; expect some fandom characters to be wandering citizens of The Nexus at any given time. You can even have OCs be Domestic citizens if you so choose.

Continuity and setting is pretty loose and can be freely manipulated at any time. Feel free to maintain a continuity with your characters and their relationships, or feel free to do a one off post with a character you're not planning on having around frequently.

Rules:

As this community is invite-only, there will be practically no moderation, and the general rules should be common sense if you are invited: be courteous, be friendly, communicate your needs and boundaries and respect those needs and boundaries, and absolutely no bigotry or drama. This is for fun between friends, and should be treated as such!

Rule breaking will be handled on a case by case basis, but most likely you will be kicked out if you cause any problems or make anyone uncomfortable.
